PCEP has created a unit – a set of 5 connected lessons – on mangroves for students in grades 3-5. My son tired out after about five hours so we had to head in, but you could tell that Drew would have just kept going because we were having so much fun.Mangroves are a critical part of ecosystems in many Pacific island communities. My nephew was catching fish after fish and so proud of himself. My niece and nephew (teens) aren't really into the outdoors yet they were the first to do everything. He taught us about fishing, wildlife, boating, water, etc. He let my son have a turn at driving and was incredibly patient with him. We touched and walked with 8 foot nurse sharks, did some awesome fishing in the mangroves, saw rays fly and turtles surface, watched dolphins dive behind the boat, did some shelling and relaxed / swam in the water. It is immediately obvious Drew respects the wildlife on this beautiful island. If you are patient, observant and let Drew lead the trip, you cannot go wrong. It was a fantastic trip from start to finish - worth EVERY single dime and then some. We wanted to just "go with the flow" for 4+ hours and Drew was all for it. I'm not a fan of large sight-seeing boats so we called Captain Drew and said we wanted to do a little bit of everything. I would recommend it to anyone looking to have an adventure and learn about floridas wildlife. It was an amazing day and I will absolutely be using mangrove maniacs again on my next trip there. The manatees we saw were in a HUGE group and they also came close to the boat to check us out. He swam around us for a bit and blew bubbles at us. We were even lucky enough to see one of the dolphins catch a huge snook and proceed to bring it over to the the boat to show it off to us. On the way back we saw eagle rays, sharks, manatees, more birds and dolphins. We then had a snack that we kept in the cooler he had on the boat and headed out to another island to see and learn about the domes which are an old home that is now partially submerged. Which was very successful thanks to his knowledge. We made our way back to the boat and headed to another island where we did some more shelling and a little fishing. Captain Drew was extremely knowledgeable and did a great job at teaching us all about it. We saw so much wildlife like sharks, bald eagles, spoonbills, and many other fish and birds. We then went and explored on the kayaks for a bit longer. We made our way(on the kayaks) to a secluded beach to do some shelling for a bit. It is nice because he can adjust the trip to suite you no matter how experienced you are. We started by heading out to the mangroves where we unloaded the kayaks, my friend and I went solo and our moms went tandem. A friend of mine wanted to go kayaking, which is how we stumbled upon mangrove maniacs. I have been going to Marco Island my whole life and have had many adventures there. We had an amazing day going out on the boat with Capt. We would highly recommend Mangrove Maniacs and would use them again next time we visit Marco. The kids had a blast and so did my husband and I. Captain Jason took us to a deserted island for shelling where we got some of the most beautiful shells I've ever seen. We saw dolphins multiple times (and even saw them mating!). Capt Jason made it interesting for the kids and answered all their questions patiently. We learned about the local birds as we saw them and even got to see some baby pelicans feed. Captain Jason was very knowledgeable about all the birds and the marine life in the area. We booked a 2 1/2 to 3 hour shelling tour with Mangrove Maniacs- it was the perfect amount of time for the kids. We have 3 boys (4 year old twins and an almost 7 year old) and wanted to see some wildlife and go shelling on some of the islands. It was really worth every penny!! I would go again in a heartbeat. I grew up in Florida- ,my family always had boats and went out regularly so I was reluctant to spend the money for a tour, but I recognize the value in going out with someone who really knows the area.
